- shredded beets and carrots
- spinach
- sprouts
- a mixture of black beans and tomatoes
- mushrooms sauteed in veggie stock

- amazingly tasty sauce made with tahini, garlic, lemon, dill, paprika, avocado and flax oil.

i don't know...
i think that it's soy and a bunch of chemicals...
hurraaaaaaaaaaay.
i don't usually eat really processed things... but every once in a while... yum!
most soy cheese has casein (which is a milk protein) in it to make it melt, so most of them aren't technically vegan.

cute story:
the other day i went to budgies and ordered a vegan burrito, and the boy working asked me if i wanted a slice of vegan cheese on it, and i said yes please, and then he pulled a slice out of his lunch box.
it was really nice.
jake calls it the secret "vegan support network".

except it's not really vegan! It's the "secretly non-vegan-vegan support network"!

no no. this one was really vegan. hurrah!

i also had another "vegan support network" experience at melriche's, where they were out of veggie samosas... but i had already paid for one, and it so happened that they didn't really have any other vegan food. i told them that that was fine, and i'd just get my monies back, but then the guy working went out of his way to make me a super amazing grilled veg sammich sans cheese, and didn't charge me anything extra. it was pretty rad...
and delicious!

LONG LJ COMMENTS, ALTAIRA! WAY TO GO!

This just goes to show that the world is full of people who are meatists! No one's ever offered me that when they were out of turkey panini's!

that looks delicious.

If you are trying to do the full on vegan thing then be careful with some soy cheeses...some have animal byproducts in them. I forget what its called...but for some odd reason some have it in there to help the cheese melt.

see above comments.

the one that i bought is casein free.
also... there's this vegan cheese that they have been talking about on post punk kitchen lately called teese, which is supposed to be amazing... which i think that i might order from the internets in the near future.

if you happen to find a vegan cheese that also does not contain Soy...please let me know! As much as i love goats cheese (the only kind I am able to eat)...I miss variety!

you would L-O-V-E france... they have billions and billions of goat cheese varieties there...

also, i have heard that there is, in fact, rice cheese that's vegan... but it's also supposed to be not very good... i would stick with the goats if i were you...

when it comes time for farmers' markets again, there is one vendor who does exclusively goat cheeses of different varieties... and they are all delicious.

in fact, they might be part of the winter farmers' markets as well (which runs the 2nd and 4th sunday of every month at the WISE hall). I forget what their company name is, but i'm sure that you could check the farmers' market website to see if they are around...

CHEESE!

mmmmmmmmm. nom nom nom.
nutritional yeast cheese sauce is also amazing for on things like this. I have been making lots of vegan things (dahl, deep fried-spicy corn-naan, aloo gobi, sweet and sour 'pork', etc.) for myself this week and will be posting about them in the near future. lookout!
nutritional yeast cheese sauce, incase you didn't know, is made this way...
mix equal amounts of nutritional yeast and flour (I put a bit more yeast than flour), salt, paprika, pepper and i like some cayenne...then whisk in water and heat till it bubbles and thickens and add more water if ya need to...then goes in a bit of earth balance and dijon mustard and braggs to taste. you can keep it in the fridge and put it on everything.
great. Now I want some!

I would have thought that yeast wouldn't be vegan...it's a live organism. I don't get it. There are so many ambiguous rules! Can someone explaiiinnnnnnn what veganism is really all about?! How come some vegans won't eat honey? What is the history of veganism and why the hell do people choose to become vegans anyway, I need answers! The internet is so mamsy pamsy about the whole thing, so I want to know why I have so many good and dear friends who eat fake meat and cheese!

ugh. there are many different ideas about what it means to be "vegan". yes, there are ambiguous rules.. but like many things, it's kind of up to you to make them for yourself. the most basic rules are no eating animals or products that come out of the bodies of animals.
some vegans don't eat honey, or eat sugar or beer or wine which has been filtered or something through animal bone char. some vegans don't wear leather...

for the meat and cheese part... i'm pretty sure that you're aware of at least why i have given them up:
-better for my health
-better for animal rights
-better for the environment

say what you want about the impacts of growing soy... but a lot of it is grown (in combo with corn) to feed factory farm animals... and a lot of what you can say about the negative impacts of growing soy is pretty much the same as the downfalls of any agrobusiness.

la!

I still don't know about all this veganism mumbo-jumbo, but thanks for clarifying once again! Sorry to put you through all my fidgety ignorance!

Now I'm going to go sip my lemon/cayenne/maple syrup water. Blargh.

have you gone to the mexican place by the met?
they have this drink called HORCHATTA you can probably google it
it's delicious. it's rice milke with vanilla, on the rocks and topped
with cinnamon which slowly makes its way through the drink.
just be careful not to inhale or you will choke and die

and another fun food that is super simple and delicious
is lightly toasting small corn tortillas in a pan and sprinkling
brown sugar and cinnamon on top and then squeezing fresh lime over
it's so good.

those are my two current faves.
